Play Razz Poker, the Game Everyone Loves to Hate

Introduction to Razz Poker

What is the toughest kind of poker in the world? Many will tell you Razz has got to be the most frustrating of them all. Even professional players feel that way about this game.

Razz is what's called a "lowball" game. The worst poker hand wins instead of the best hand. That alone makes it an interesting diversion from the usual Texas and Omaha Holdem poker, don't you think so?

How to Play Razz Poker

Razz poker begins with the ante bet. The ante is not the same as the blinds. An ante is a mandatory bet from ALL players who are in the pot. Before the start of a Razz game, the ante amount is decided.

Next, cards are dealt to each player at the Razz table. The player with the highest-ranked card at the Third Street stage must make the bring-in or forced wager. This is only for this point in the game; later it is the player with the lowest-ranked card who moves first. Should there be a tie, the player nearest the dealer's left acts first.

Note that unlike in 7 Card Stud, there is no "double your bet" option even if you manage to pair off your door card.

After this follow fourth, fifth and sixth streets. Every Razz player is dealt a card face up. These are almost identical with one another. But the limits go up on fifth street. If the betting limit at the Razz poker table is $5/$10, then the cap is $5 at the third and fourth streets and $10 after that.

On seventh and last street, each player receives a last hole card for a total of three down cards and four up cards. A showdown ensues and the worst five-card poker hand wins.

Winning Hands in Razz Poker

In Razz poker, the flush and straight are not counted and aces are considered low. Therefore the best (worst) hand in Razz poker is A2345.

To judge which hand is lowest, start with the highest card of a five-card hand. The hand with the lowest high card wins, ex: 84432 beats 9532A. If there is a tie then you move on to the next card and so on.
